Customer development & repeat paid business

Building a European customer base from the ground up.

Starting in Belgium in 2010 without an existing local customer base or network, I built business for RECOM across European markets. My contribution included €8.5M+ in new business over a twelve-month period. I identified and approached buyers, developed customer and distribution relationships, negotiated orders and took ownership of the commercial process through payment and delivery coordination.

The assignment

Establish a customer base in unfamiliar markets, give buyers a reason to commit to a new supplier and develop those relationships into continuing business.

My role

I owned the customer relationships, from identifying and approaching buyers through product qualification, proposals, negotiation, orders and payment follow-up. I worked with management, technical colleagues, sales support, accounting and logistics to resolve commercial requirements and progress the business.

The work behind the business

01/From 2010

I identified buyers and built the relationships.

I identified prospective customers and partners, approached them directly and developed the discussions through calls, meetings and follow-up. I built the relationships around the buyer's requirements and a workable route to market.

With a UK distributor, I addressed pricing, availability, delivery terms and how RECOM would work with distribution partners. The discussion progressed to an order and deposit.

Result

A new UK distributor relationship progressed to an order and deposit.

02/Selected examples · August–September 2013

I turned buyer requirements into orders.

The UK distributor needed product information, references and clear commercial terms before committing. I handled those discussions and brought the buyer through to its purchase order and deposit-payment confirmation.

A German customer received samples before sending me a two-container order worth €196,560. When it raised the security of advance payments, I involved colleagues in considering a workable arrangement, including the possibility of a letter of credit.

Result

Orders secured after addressing product qualification, commercial terms and payment requirements.

03/Selected examples · October–November 2013

I stayed involved until payments were received.

I followed payments with customers and checked receipt with accounting. Once the €157,248 balance on the German order reached RECOM's account, I asked colleagues to release the modules.

Accounting also confirmed the full €240,677 payment on another European account I handled. I informed the customer and progressed dispatch arrangements with colleagues.

In November 2013, RECOM's accounting team also checked an analysis of my sales and explicitly confirmed that the listed proformas were fully paid.

Result

Customer payments received by RECOM, supported by accounting confirmations and coordinated release and dispatch.

04/Selected examples · 2013–2014

I developed the accounts into substantially more business.

The German customer placed a further €1.4M in orders during 2013. The account behind the €240,677 paid order purchased a further €1.1M that year. Together, those two relationships generated an additional €2.5M in orders beyond the transactions illustrated earlier.

I continued developing the Benelux distribution network through further purchasing, availability discussions and commercial follow-up. The retained records cover multiple orders in 2013 and further purchasing in 2014.

A Benelux-based distribution partner that placed regular monthly orders generated €390,550 in revenue in July 2014 alone. A separate returning account paid €300,940 across two transfers in June 2014, with full receipt subsequently confirmed to me in a second email from accounting.

Result

Established accounts returned with further orders and payments.

About the figures and correspondence

The activity began in 2010. The retained business records and correspondence illustrate selected transactions from 2013–2014. €8.5M+ is the broader twelve-month new-business result delivered by Zach. The €2.5M combines the additional €1.4M and €1.1M in 2013 orders from two accounts. The €390,550 relates to revenue from a Benelux distribution partner in July 2014 alone. These order and payment examples form part of the wider trading history and should not be added to the €8.5M+ or to one another as a new total. Client identities, contact details and banking information are omitted. Amounts in the case text are rounded to the nearest euro where needed. Correspondence excerpts retain their original wording.

Selected excerpts illustrate the work. Customer and colleague identities, contact details and selected commercial terms are omitted. The case forms part of Zach Kallergis’s wider renewable energy and technology experience.
